RENFREW - It’s time for the ninth annual Farm Comes To Town!
On Wednesday, April 10 Renfrew County farmers will bring their animals, machinery and knowledge to the Renfrew Armouries to share and help teach Grade 5 students from schools throughout the county about agriculture.
The day will be an intense learning activity for the approximately 400 students from 10 schools as they learn about the seven featured commodity stations: beef, dairy, honey, pork, poultry and eggs, sheep, and soil and crop. Farmers are on hand to answer questions and provide information to the students.
In addition to the pre-arranged day time event, there is an evening session that is open to the public from 5 to 8 p.m., which will feature a litter of piglets, a milking demonstration, fluffy chicks, grind your own flour, rope making, exploring with hand size farm equipment, sheep, an agriculture treasure hunt, cattle, an observation bee hive, and many other activities.
Farm Comes To Town runs smoothly every year thanks to the many volunteers that talk about their commodity group, bring their animals, clean up, organize the event, and even feed the volunteers. The Renfrew Agricultural Society graciously donates the use of the Renfrew Armouries every year to accommodate the event.
Why do farmers make this effort? It is important for children to learn where their food comes from and that it is produced humanely, in a manner that is environmentally safe, and that farmers are stewards of the land. Farmers want to ensure that there will be safe and good food produced in Canada for all Canadians for years to come.
