  • 16-year tractor pull tradition in Kinburn ends

KINBURN -- There will be no annual antique tractor and truck pull in Kinburn this year as organizers have decided to not run an event. Organizer Rob Dowd chalked up the reasoning to a combination of factors beginning with the Kinburn Community Association's decision to not sponsor the event, instead choosing to hold an end-of-summer concert. Their sponsorship was the tractor/truck pull main sponsor. The Kinburn Community Association decided it in the fall of 2011 that they would not be renewing their sponsorship.

In addition, Dowd says that the event has been battling weather for the past couple of years. "We had been playing with the weather trying to dodge it for the past three years. We tried to get two events going last year, one in the summer and one in the fall and both times we battled rain. With that, attendance dwindled and it became harder to get volunteers."

The lack of volunteers was another reason cited to the end of the event's run.

Still, despite the end of the 16-year run Dowd, an organizer since the inaugural year, is keeping positive. "It ran it's course. We had a good run, but for now we'll take a break for a year or two and then revisit the idea. We'll save the date and maybe it will come back."

If the event is to come back, it will need to find a new piece of land as the land the current track is on was recently sold. Just one of the things organizers will need to consider if they revisit the idea.

In the meantime, organizers have provided exhibitors other local options if they are looking for similar events. The Farmersville Exhibition is in Athens July 20-22 and the Antique Wheel in Motion is just north of Prescott, in Roebuck Aug. 21-22.
