Your business and the millennium bug

The Federal Government's Department of Finance has extended its program to allow small and medium sized businesses to upgrade their computer systems to handle the year 2000 problem. Revenue Canada will allow a full deduction for the purchase of hardware and software to replace similar property which was not Y2K compliant.

The deadline is now extended until Oct.31. Equipment and upgrades eligible for this full deduction can be purchased between Jan. 1, 1998 and Oct. 31, 1999. To take advantage of this special deduction, the tax filer must file a letter with their 1999 return describing the property purchased, it's cost, and a description of the non compliant equipment it replaces. The tax payer must show that the old property would not function properly because of the calendar year change to 2000.
